Thacker Mountain Tribute to Jim Dickinson This Saturday

Posted by Tricia Walker on Friday, August 21, 2009 , under , | comments (0)

To all the Friends of Thacker Mountain Radio:

As many of you may already know, we lost one of the most integral (and joyous) members of our radio show family on August 15 with the passing of our beloved Jim Dickinson. Jim was the piano player in the Yalobushwhackers, our house band, but more than that, he brought intelligence, humor and an innate soulfulness to our show and to our lives. We invite you to listen to Mississippi Public Broadcasting (90.3FM in Oxford) this Saturday, August 22, at 7PM for a special show featuring a full hour of Jim playing and singing with the Thacker band. Our fall season starts on September 3 when we will attempt to move forward, but this Saturday, we’re going to look back, not with tears, but with grateful memories. As Jim might say, “So sit back, put some gin in your glass and dig it.” Thanks for listening- Jim Dees, host of Thacker Mountain Radio P.S. World Boogie is Coming!

Jerome "Top Notch" Williams, a DMI student from Clarksdale, Mississippi, is the featured focus of a new book, Let The World Listen Right, written by author Ali Neff and published by University Press of Mississippi.

Let the World Listen Right draws from classic studies of the blues as well as extensive ethnographic work to document the "changing same" of Delta music making. The book focuses particularly on the biography of TopNotch, whose hip-hop poetics emerge from a lifetime of schoolyard dozens and training in the gospel church.

Top Notch is the visionary behind the creation of the Delta Hip Hop Conference, held for the past two years on the campus of Delta State University and hosted by the Delta Music Institute. dmi.deltastate.edu
